Bowers & Wilkins is a company known for its well-designed and booming high-end speakers and Hi-Fi systems as well as dock systems for Apple iPods and iPhones. They are rather well known for their Zeppelin iPod dock that is almost like a rite of passage for anyone who wants to experience uncompressed, uncluttered sound from their little portable music device.

Thus it comes as a bit of a surprise with the Bowers & Wilkins C5 headphones – getting into the market of the best in ear headphones is not the USP for B&W, and certainly not the market for the best noise cancelling headphones! But it does seem like they have managed to break in on the market with an excellent price point and striking, industrial design that is reminiscent of all their HiFi systems of the past.

The C5s are exquisitely crafted and have a very natural and very rich sound that is a treat to listen to. The highs and mids are brilliant with lilting notes that linger on long after you have removed the earphones and the Secure Loop. The bass is quite grand, but lacks depth that would have made it a little punchier. Otherwise, these are excellent earphones.

UNBOXING VIDEO

  • Design

The Bowers & Wilkins C5 headphones are well crafted little pieces of future metal. The micro-pores on the flat part of the cylindrical bottom look like little droplets of tungsten metal while the entire look and feel of the device is one of high quality – and for its price, quite admirable. The Secure Loop is a genius invention in that you have to loop it over your ears first before securing the fit of the tip inside your ear. This ensures that the earphones stay put inside your ear with any kind of tip.

  • Build Quality

The tube is made of tungsten, while the entire body is crafted out of aluminium. While the earphones themselves are quite small, they are quite light and resistant to quite a bit of rough handling. The cable is a little on the thinner side, however.

  • Comfort

The Secure Loop design allows the earphones to securely hang on to your ears – this is especially useful for the exercise junkies out there. The loop, however, does not allow for a secure acoustic seal in many cases. This detracts from the overall comfort experience.

  • Highs

Brilliant, lilting notes in the high frequency response.

  • Mids

Enveloping midrange frequencies allow for clear definition of vocals and violin notes.

  • Lows

Clear, well defined bass lines but lack the oomph of other earphones in this category.

  • Noise Reduction

A good acoustic seal is required for good reduction on noise, and this varies from person to person due to the Secure Loop.

  • Performance

The performance of the C5s was quite excellent for the price range.

PROS

  • Rich, naturally textured sound for the price range
  • Excellent build quality
  • Striking, industrial design

CONS

  • Bass could use a little more amplification
  • In-line remote only works with Apple devices and not with Android phones or other smartphones
  • The Secure Loop may not be comfortable for all users

Verdict

The Bowers & Wilkins C5 headphones are quite a steal for the current price range in which they are selling. The company has an illustrious and long history of making excellent speakers, and they do not miss their mark with the C5. This is a well balanced set of earphones for those who want great sound quality, good build quality and a price that would not bankrupt them.
